Tom Tongue played an integral role in Dunn Carney since joining the firm in 1968 and until his retirement in December 2018. He served terms as managing partner and leader of the Litigation Team, and as a mentor to many of the firm’s attorneys. His practice centered on complex civil litigation and health law.

A highly respected fourth generation Oregon attorney, Tom represented the highest level of skill and professionalism in the practice of law. He received the Multnomah Bar Association and the Oregon State Bar Litigation Section Owen Panner Professionalism Awards. In 2011-12, he was President of the American College of Trial Lawyers, the most distinguished group of trial lawyers in America and Canada. He was elected a Fellow in the ACTL in 1993. As recipient of the 2011 Judge Learned Hand Award, he was recognized for representing the same values as Judge Hand: upholding the rights of the individual and the importance of democratic values in an orderly society.

Tom’s career was marked with a vast array of honors and awards, underscoring his reputation in the legal community and the example he set for fellow lawyers.  His peers were quoted by Chambers and Partners USA, describing Tom as “one of the finest – he has all the right attributes you want in a lawyer.”

Tom has been married to his wife, Dr. Andrea Tongue, since 1971. They have two children who both work in the legal field; his son is a fifth generation lawyer, and his daughter clerked for the U.S. Supreme Court and is now a law professor. In his spare time, Tom enjoys fly fishing, golfing and hiking.
