Ryan N. Donovan
Associate Attorney
Ryan Donovan is a litigation associate who helps clients navigate complex commercial, construction, and general liability disputes, with a particular focus on insurance defense and coverage matters. Before joining Dunn Carney, Ryan practiced in the Portland office of a national law firm. He regularly represented insurers, businesses, and professionals in complex commercial and construction and insurance coverage disputes, with a strong emphasis on defending insurers and providing nuanced coverage analysis, including bad faith claims and first-party matters.
Before becoming an attorney, Ryan served as an intelligence officer in the U.S. intelligence community, where he researched and published all-source intelligence studies, briefed executive branch policymakers, and coordinated intelligence assessments. That unique analytical background informs his meticulous approach to complex litigation and strategic advocacy.
Ryan earned his J.D., cum laude, from Willamette University School of Law in 2025. During law school, he served as a law clerk with the Civil Litigation Section of the Oregon Department of Justice, and as a judicial extern for the Hon. Stephen Bushong of the Oregon Supreme Court and Judge Jolie Russo of the U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon. Ryan also served as Editor-in-Chief of the Willamette Journal of International Law and Dispute Resolution. He received his B.A., magna cum laude, in Political Science and Russian from Portland State University in 2019, earning notable distinctions including the Critical Language Scholarship and Ambassador Annenberg Fellowship.
Outside the office, Ryan enjoys spending time with his wife and labrador retriever, traveling abroad, and exploring the Pacific Northwest.
