2013 Presentations

January 11- Dunn Carney Ag Summit 2013 at the Holiday Inn in Wilsonville.  Bill Wyatt, Executive Director of the Port of Portland was our keynote speaker.  Other speakers included Katy Coba, Exec. Director of the Oregon Dept. of Agriculture, Tim Bernasek, Elizabeth Howard, Chris Parnell, Marsha Murray-Lusby and Heather Guthrie.  We had over 100 attendees at the summit.

January 22-14- Bill Joseph is speaking at the National Association of Home Builders International Builders Show in Las Vegas.  He will make two presentations, “The Hazards of Going Green: Green Construction from a Liability Perspective” and “Reduce Homeowner Litigation: Common Sense Business Tools for Mitigating Losses.”   Nate MacIntyre, Building Science Expert with MC Consultants in Portland, OR will join Bill on the Hazards of Going Green presentation and C. Stephen Tobin of Paxson & Associates, P.C. of  Houston, TX will join him on the Reducing Homeowner Litigation speech.

January 25-Elizabeth Howard spoke at the Safari Club International Convention in Reno, Nevada on “Can States Authorize Hunts and Trapping in Areas Where Non-Essential, Experimental Populations Reside?”

February 20-Ken Antell spoke at a BOMA Continuing Education Class on the  “Top 10 Issues to Consider in Leasing.”

February 26- David Zehntbauer spoke on Ethical Considerations for Exempt Organizations Practitioners at an National Business Institute Seminar titled Tax Exempt Organizations From Start to Finish.

February 28- Bill Joseph will host a webinar with Julia Molloy on “Legal Contracts for Interior Designers.”

March 13- Heather Guthrie will speak on The Essentials of Estate Planning and the Estate Administration Process to a group of women professionals. Bridget Lynn is coordinating this event with Courtney Mersereau of RBC Wealth Management.  We expect about 30 people to attend the event.

March 20- Eric Kekel will be part of a panel discussion at the MC Consultants 4th Annual Pacific Northwest Construction Defect Seminar and Networking Party.    The panel will address Oregon Industry Trends and Case Law Review.

April 18-Bill Joseph will speak at the Ecovative Build Right Conference and Expo on Reduce Homeowner Litigation:  Common Sense Business Tools for Mitigating Losses.

June 6-Jack Hoffman will speak at the 6th Annual Eminent Domain:Current Developments in Condemnation, Valuation & Challenges Seminar sponsored by The Seminar Group.  He will speak with Richard Vial of Vial Fotheringham LLP on Condominium and Homeowner Association Issues in Eminent Domain.

July 19- Bill Joseph will speak at the Oregon Home Builders’ Summer Conference at Eagle Crest Resort.  His topic will be Loss Mitigation: How to Reduce Litigation By Taking a Holistic Approach to the Contracting, Construction, Sales and Warranty Processes.

August 8-10- Bill Joseph will speak at the Associated General Contractors Summer Convention.   His topic will be Best Practices in Construction Risk Management.

2012 Presentations

Jan. 5 – Jack Cooper gave a speech to the Industry Credit Group Chairs of the NACM.

Jan. 21 – David Zehntbauer made a presentation on Real Estate Law at the Paralegal Career Day for the Portland Community College Paralegal Club.

Jan. 27–Ag Summit at the Holiday Inn in Wilsonville. U.S. Congressman Kurt Schrader will be our keynote speaker.  We will also have presentations from Katy Coba, Director of the Oregon Dept. of Agriculture, Tim Bernasek on Farm Labor, and three panel discussions:

  • Water Quality issues-moderated by Elizabeth Howard,
  • Land Use- moderated by Jack Hoffman and
  • 2012 Legislative session-moderated by Tim Bernasek.
    Our keynote speaker is Kurt Schrader, U.S. Congressman.

Feb. 23- Ken Antell will speak at the 2011 BOMA Lease Review – Brown Bag Lunch.  He and others will review the changes to the 2011 BOMA Lease.

March 2- The Wills and Estates Team will host their first Estate Planning & Administration seminar series.  The first topic is Updating your Will—When and Why?

March 7-Heather Guthrie will make a presentation to Umpqua Bank executives about the new Oregon Estate Tax Law.

March 7- JoDee Keegan will speak at the Multnomah Bar Association CLE on Mergers and Acquisitions.

March 8- Bill Joseph is speaking with Joel Dietzman – Anchor Insurance & Surety on Insurance and Risk Management Basics For Project Managers at the Associated General Contractors University.

March 14- Jon Bennett will speak to the Oregon Chapter of the American Counsel of Engineering Companies (ACEC) on Liability issues for engineering and surveying design professionals.

March 16- Three members of our construction team will speak at the Associated Builders and Contractors Construction Industry Summit.  John Chambers’ topic will be Avoiding and Resolving Construction Claims and Litigation. David Buono will speak on Getting Paid on Public Contracts, Claims and Payment Bonds and Damon Henrie will address ­­­­­Oregon Construction Indemnity.

April 6- The Wills and Estates team will host their second seminar, All About Trusts-Revocable Living Trusts, Joint and Single Trusts.  Heather Guthrie and Ken Davis were the presenters.  We had 24 guests.

April 11- Bill Joseph and John Chambers will speak at the HBA Ecovative Conference.  Their presentation will be Residential Construction Contracts 101: The Dos, Don’ts & Musts of What Should/Shouldn’t Be In Your Contracts.   Bill will also speak with Nate MacIntyre of MC Consultants, Inc. on The Hazards of Going Green: Green Construction from a Liability Perspective.

April 25- Anne Foster will speak on a panel titled Litigation Revolution: How the iPad Might Change the Game at the Meritas Annual meeting in New Orleans.

April 25-Ken Antell will speak at Norris & Stevens on Misrepresentations Claims Against Oregon and Washington Real Estate Licensees.

May 4- The Wills and Estates team will host their third seminar, Life Insurance Trusts-how to make this a successful planning strategy.

May 11- Anne Foster gave a presentation regarding the use of TrialPad in Courtroom at Starbucks Summit

May 17- Elizabeth Howard will speak at the “Tribal Water in the Pacific Northwest” workshop in Seattle, WA.   This workshop is sponsored by Law Seminars International.

May 17- Ken Antell and Carl Deters reviewed the changes to the BOMA 2011 office, retail and business park leases at the 2011 BOMA Lease Review – Brown Bag Lunch.

May 17- Jack Hoffman made a presentation on Condemnation of Condominium Property, Lessons from the Sellwood Bridge Project at the Eminent Domain seminar sponsored by the Seminar Group.

June 1- The Estate Planning group will host their 4th seminar, Planning for Medical Incapacity – Advance Directives & POLSTs.”  Marsha Murray-Lusby made the presentation.

June 14- David Rossmiller spoke at the 2012 Oregon Brownfields Conference on a panel called “Putting Old Insurance Policies to Work.”

July 18- Bill Joseph spoke at the Homebuilders Association PRO meeting on “Construction Contracts: Dos, Don’ts & Musts.”

Aug. 23- Melissa Busley spoke on State Death Taxes at the Tax Planning for Trusts and Estates seminar sponsored by the National Business Institute.

Oct. 4- Dunn Carney Employment Seminar—Employment Law 101 at the Multnomah Athletic Club.  All members of the Employment team will participate/present.

Oct. 9- Dunn Carney Construction Seminar at the Homebuilders Association of Metro Portland.

  •  Susan Glen will address CC&Rs—How to deal with them and what to watch out for.
  • Bill Joseph will speak on Green Projects–What you need know and
  • Hunter Bitner will address Insurance for the Construction Industry–A primer & checklist for contractors.

Oct. 17- Bill Joseph will speak on “Know Your Lien Rights & Requirements to Get Paid (Oregon and Washington)” for the Associated General Contractors.

Dec. 10- Ty Wyman will speak at Land Use Law: Current Issues in Subdivision, Annexation and Zoning Seminar sponsored by National Business Institute.

Jan. 19-  Bill Joseph speaks at the AGC University on Oregon Construction Liens – Assure You Get Paid and Payment and Performance Bonds: Finishing the Job and Getting Paid.

Jan. 20- Bill Joseph presented a Legislative Update at a Fidelity Title luncheon.

Jan. 22 – Dunn Carney’s new Bankruptcy attorney, Chris Parnell, gave a presentation on “Introduction to Bankruptcy Law and Procedure” at the Introduction to Legal Concepts Boot Camp sponsored by Lewis & Clark Law School at the OHSU Center for Health and Healing.

Jan. 25- Dunn Carney hosted the International Trademark Association (INTA) Roundtable on Trademark Law in the Fashion and Apparel Industries.   Justin Aida led the roundtable discussion.  Merrill Baumann, Laura Althouse and David Zehntbauer also attended.

Feb.  4 – Jack Cooper made an Antitrust presentation to chairs of National Association of Credit Managers  (NACM) Industry Groups

Feb. 24- John Miller will make a presentation on Article 2 to National Association of Credit Managers  (NACM) in a webinar.

March 3- Eric Kekel was a moderator for a panel addressing Challenges in Funding Settlements in Construction Defect Cases at the MC Consultants meeting in Portland.

March 3- Jack Cooper will present a Webinar entitled, Are You Playing “The Price is Right” or “Jeopardy”? – Avoiding Price Discrimination Claims.

March 7-9-Dunn Carney was a sponsor of the 2011 Oregon Dairy Farmers Annual Convention.  Elizabeth Howard made a presentatin at the Convention.

March 17 Bill Joseph will speak with Joel Dietzman, Anchor Insurance & Surety, Inc. at the AGC University on  Insurance Basics for Contractors.  This course was open to anyone interested in learning more about insurance, a main strategy used by contractors to manage risk.

March 17- Bill Joseph spoke with Joel Dietzman, Anchor Insurance & Surety, Inc. at the AGC University on Insurance-Builders’ Risk. Builders’ risk coverage (also referred to course of construction coverage) is a critical component of a construction project’s risk management program.

April 7- David Rossmiller will speak with Peter Vitsznik of Kilmer Voorhees at a seminar,  Insurance in the Construction Industry, sponsored by The Seminar Group.  Their topic will be Insured Coverage; Scope of Coverage: Defense vs. Indemnity; Impact of Anti-Indemnity Statute; Timing of Defense Determination; Allocation of Additional Insured Defense Costs

April 13- Bill Joseph will speak at the AGC University on  What Every Project Manager Needs to Know About Insurance and Risk Management

April 25- Bob Winger will speak at a National Business Institute seminar on “LLC or INC.?  Entity Selection for a Small to Medium Sized Business.  His topic is Advanced Issues in Business Entity Selection.
